THE SQUIRREL OR THE SNAKE?
There once was a woman that lived on a large expanse of land. One afternoon, like most, she took her tea to sit on the back porch and enjoy the view. She lived on a lot of land so she had a small portion of chain link fence to keep her dogs from wondering off when not being watched. Right up against the fence was a beautiful tree that she had put wind chimes in. She loved to sit on her back porch sipping her tea and listening to the gentle song of the wind chimes.
As she sat there she began to hear a weird squeaking noise. At first she didn’t pay much attention to it, but it kept getting louder. She searched around and saw that up in the tree a snake had wrapped itself around a fluffy squirrel. Full of concern and panic she looked around for a stick and quickly found one. She poked the snake and easily knocked it off the branch. It landed on the ground on the other side of the fence. The squirrel was free and after shaking it off ran away.
She was pleased that she saved the squirrel. Since the mood was ruined, she went back in the house to finish some chores. After a while she heard a big commotion in the back yard. The dogs were barking and growling. She ran outside to find in horror that one of her dogs had grabbed the snake and was pulling on it. The snake was using the chain link fence to get back to the tree and had woven himself in the fence. The dog was pulling so hard that it ripped and killed the snake.
She was filled with grief realizing that she had caused the snake’s death. She realized that she didn’t think of the scaly snake and his needs when she interfered and took away what might have been his only meal in some time.
This is a true story.
