Get a piece of paper. Don’t read ahead! Now take your sheet of paper and answer the following questions.
1. Who are you?
2. Are you your emotions?
3. Are you your thoughts?
4. Are you your actions?
5. What makes you, YOU?
Now that you have taken a moment to think about these questions, you can read on.
I really don't care what people think when it comes to their spirituality unless they find it restricting or it harms others. People need their beliefs. I know what it is to lose belief. It can be a painful experience - like a child being told Santa doesn't exist. I am always pushing my own understanding of this thing called life. I keep asking until something makes sense from all angles, and as a result I constantly have to look at my beliefs.
It may be contrary to reasoning, but I have realized the fewer beliefs you have the clearer and more balanced you are. You are more able to TRULY perceive what is around you. Your beliefs come from your experiences or other people's experiences. Experiences become expectations which are ultimately beliefs. For example, if someone believes they will go to heaven after they die they are expecting to do just that.
I am sure everyone has heard of the "veil" - the "thing" that keeps us from full perception. I understand now that beliefs are veils. If you believe you know everything about a certain subject, it is very unlikely that you would investigate this other point of view and as a result you miss the broader picture. You would however feel the need to protect your beliefs.
I also have experienced the less beliefs I have the more spiritual I feel and act. I really don't like the word spiritual because it has a belief attached to it of "being better" to most. From a clear perspective, spirit is all there is. Every realm is a spiritual realm. Without spirit nothing exists. Spirit literally means to breath. To go for an extended time without spirit (breath) equals death.
Within everyone there is spirit. God could not be omnipresent if that were not true. The less misperceptions and beliefs you have the more aware you are of this spirit, call it whatever you want God, Buddha, All That Is, The One, etc. When you become deeply aware of this spirit you also become aware that it is in everyone tying us all together. As a result of this awareness you actions become more compassionate and loving - to the degree you are truly aware (in you heart not just your mind) of this spirit within you. Hence, the more aware you are of this spirit in us and tying us together the more spiritual you become.
We are all spiritual beings...EVERYONE ONE OF US!
When someone says "That is who I am!" they are usually referring to their beliefs. They are referring to the veil rather than to who they truly are. We are not our emotions or our beliefs, yet the personalities we refer to as "me" are our mental and emotional habits of reaction to the environment. Which when looked at in a certain way is saying "I am the mental and emotional habits I come from when speaking and relating to the environment". But your words are really not who you are because your word is based in illusion. Without going to deep, the true you is unfiltered (unveiled) perception which results in appropriate and constructive action every moment.
Changing yourself (getting closer to the true you) really comes down to changing your mental or emotional habits which in turn changes your actions in the environment from disruptive to constructive. This is then reflected in the body as health which is constructive verses disruptive which is disease.
